On Retreat with The Rev. Ron Rolheiser, omi

Over the past few years Oblate Media and Communications have released several presentations - using a DVD format - given by Ron Rolheiser, renowned author, teacher and theologian. The topics of these presentations are engaging, and seem to “speak” to participants of any age.

Due to the amount of information contained in each presentation, these DVD’s are frequently paused, to allow participants the opportunity to reflect on the material presented, respond to questions that invite them to reflect on how this material relates to their own lives, and engage in small group discussion. Each participant is given a detailed handout that summarizes the content of the presentation.

Retreat topics include:

  • The Invitation to Bless
  • Living in the Image and Likeness of God
  • Spirituality and the Two-Halves of Life
  • Eucharist: God’s Way of Embracing Us
  • The Cross of Christ
  • The Passion of Christ

Ronald Rolheiser, a Roman Catholic priest and member of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate (OMI), is president of the Oblate School of Theology in San Antonio, Texas. He is a community-builder, lecturer and writer. His books are popular throughout the English-speaking world and his weekly column is carried by more than sixty newspapers worldwide.

Spirituality and the Two Halves of Life

Growth and discipleship have two distinct parts. We leave home at an early age and spend many years trying to find our way back. How do we get back home again? That's the spiritual task for the first half of life.

But, where do we go and what do we do once we've returned home? That's the spirituality for the second half of life. No matter which half of life you're in, you'll gain new insights with this renowned author, teacher and theologian.

This captivating presentation outlines in an accessible and highly motivating way the invitations we receive throughout our life. This 2-hour DVD is best presented as a daylong retreat or weekend retreat or two 2-hour sessions in order that participants have the opportunity to reflect on the insights and challenges offered by one of Canada’s most popular speakers on the subject of Christian spirituality and faith. Handouts with prepared questions for reflection are provided, and participants are encouraged to share their response to this presentation in small group discussions.

I have been given a road map for my future – clear direction, encouragement, peace! Thank you!

Victoria Brilz, Calgary AB

I most appreciated the friendly atmosphere of this retreat – very relaxing and informative. I learned a lot, relaxed, and am heading out with confidence that I can carry out what I have learned. Thank you.

Patricia Monkhouse, Kamloops BC – Retreat at “Immaculate Heart of Mary Retreat Centre” Cache Creek BC

I most appreciated your gentle spirit and kind eyes, your sharing of your own journey, challenges and areas that need work. The handouts allowed us to focus on the content fully. I liked the scheduled breaks and free time, your availability for spiritual direction, the resources, quotes and prayers that you gave us.

Allison Ryder,  Kamloops BC – Retreat at “Immaculate Heart of Mary Retreat Centre” Cache Creek BC

I most appreciated the small group sharing – prayers and worship together with other women of faith. This was a new topic for me – not one I’ve heard anything about before. Sarah – you are an inspiration – your faith radiates from you – you have such grace and poise – thank you for being with us. Use this facility for future retreats.

Margaret Mitchell, Kamloops BC – Retreat at “Immaculate Heart of Mary Retreat Centre” Cache Creek BC

I most appreciated the opportunity to gather as women and for your presence, Sarah. I liked the free time we had to process the information. I liked the blessing exercise, meditations and prayers. I like processing information in groups. I’m seeking discipline in my spiritual journey and Sarah supplied me with some great material to use. A retreat is never all about the material and/or the presenter, but is a synergy of material, other attendees, presenter and location. This weekend gave me the desire to learn more and grow further...

Viki Engdahl, Kamloops BC – Retreat at “Immaculate Heart of Mary Retreat Centre” Cache Creek BC

The topic for the retreat was most enriching for me. I had never thought about the different stages we go through in life. Now I can identify with some parts of my journey which were always very confusing. I hope to go much more in depth with this. Thank you for the handouts. They are perfect to refer back to. I loved your style of presentation and clarity. You have been a blessing this weekend.

Trudy Smith, Kamloops BC – Retreat at “Immaculate Heart of Mary Retreat Centre” Cache Creek BC

I most appreciated the give and take, the humour and the organization. Thanks Sarah for engaging this diverse group and nourishing them in their valuable ministry at Knox Presbyterian Church.

The Rev. Laura Kavanagh, Minister, Knox Presbyterian Church – Workshop for Elders held at Queenswood Centre, Victoria

I appreciated the collegiality of our group, the warmth of our facilitator, the ideas which were presented to us and the worship in which we all participated. The setting was ideal and the course meaningful. I bless Sarah for giving us her time and energy. We are the richer for it.
