On Retreat with The Rev. Ron Rolheiser, omi

Over the past few years Oblate Media and Communications have released several presentations - using a DVD format - given by Ron Rolheiser, renowned author, teacher and theologian. The topics of these presentations are engaging, and seem to “speak” to participants of any age.

Due to the amount of information contained in each presentation, these DVD’s are frequently paused, to allow participants the opportunity to reflect on the material presented, respond to questions that invite them to reflect on how this material relates to their own lives, and engage in small group discussion. Each participant is given a detailed handout that summarizes the content of the presentation.

Retreat topics include:

  • The Invitation to Bless
  • Living in the Image and Likeness of God
  • Spirituality and the Two-Halves of Life
  • Eucharist: God’s Way of Embracing Us
  • The Cross of Christ
  • The Passion of Christ

Ronald Rolheiser, a Roman Catholic priest and member of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate (OMI), is president of the Oblate School of Theology in San Antonio, Texas. He is a community-builder, lecturer and writer. His books are popular throughout the English-speaking world and his weekly column is carried by more than sixty newspapers worldwide.

Eucharist: God’s Way of Embracing Us

We are a Eucharist people, a Eucharist Church, a community formed and nurtured by the Eucharist. How does Eucharist work? What are its various meanings?

In an engaging manner, The Rev. Ron Rolheiser invites us to reflect on the many ways different Christian traditions have understood the Eucharist, or the Lord’s Supper. This DVD presentation examines the breadth of insight into our celebration of the Eucharist – as ritual; as God’s “physical embrace;” as invitation to being transformed more fully into Christ; as the new manna – our daily bread; as sacrifice; as a gathering of the community around a meal; and as a prayer for the world. The second part of the retreat invites participants to ponder “Eucharist as Vigil” and the waiting we do in our lives – both consciously and unconsciously – as we wait for someone or something to come and change our lives so as to make them more complete. Those belonging to Anglican, Protestant and Roman Catholic traditions will be delighted, challenged and stretched as they reflect on the wonderful gift they have received in the Eucharist.

This DVD is presented in two parts. A detailed handout summarizes the content of the presentation and suggests questions for personal reflection and small group discussion. This retreat is best experienced when it is offered as a day retreat – 9:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m., and can be enjoyed at any time of the year.

I most appreciated Ron’s marvellous teaching and the opportunity to respond and then share in small groups. Wonderful! Very rich. It gave me a much deeper understanding of Eucharist. I especially appreciated your handouts Sarah – you did the work for us – a resource to take home. Thanks so much.
